Bangkok, 15 November 2021 (TDI): Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayuth Chan-O-Cha addressed the 28th APEC Meeting of Economic Area Leaders, virtually, on Friday.
The meeting was hosted by New Zealand through teleconference to discuss the regional issues. The World Economic Leaders stressed over three areas of cooperation. Firstly, APEC will work to address urgently to tackle the COVID-19 crisis in the region.
Secondly, the acceleration of economic recovery came under deliberation. Thirdly, the leaders discussed building long-term, sustainable and comprehensive growth; during the video conference.
Thailand’s Prime Minister on Economic Recovery
The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand expressed his views over accelerating economic recovery from the COVID-19 situation in the region. He suggested collaborating on three main issues in the APEC meeting.
Firstly, he emphasized accelerating the region’s reintegration through promoting safe cross-border travel. Secondly, he told the other leaders that, there is a need to stimulate trade and investment. Thirdly, he enunciated that joint efforts should be made for trade liberalization.
This will help the region to achieve the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area (FTAAP), circular economy, and green economy.
The APEC leaders stressed the importance of trade and investment to accelerate economic recovery. They also highlighted easy public access to vaccines and related medical supplies; along with various measures to reduce vaccine costs.
Economic Recovery
The participant leaders emphasized providing comprehensive economic recovery support through an open, fair, and non-discriminatory digital business environment. They also stressed the importance of adherence to the multilateral trading system in the region and beyond.
The meeting affirmed its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by adhering to Paris Agreement. They also focused on supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and women accessing the economic opportunities by using digital technology to drive.
The recent APEC Summit provided a great platform for its leaders as the Covid19 halted the procedures earlier. The Thai Premier addressed at the occasion, to accept the position of the next APEC host.
