Moscow, 6 July 2022 (TDI): Russian President, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with the Uzbek President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The Russian and Uzbekistan Presidents discussed their bilateral relations. The two counterparts also talked about certain urgent bilateral issues, especially those related to trade and the economy.

They underlined their shared commitment to advancing the strategic alliance and collaboration between Russia and Uzbekistan.

President Putin said that the Uzbek government’s efforts to control the situation in Karakalpakstan had the support of the Russian side. Both Presidents also talked about their next meetings’ schedules.

Situation in Karakalpakstan

In Karakalpakstan, an autonomous, primarily arid territory of Uzbekistan with a population of little under two million people, a state of emergency lasting one month has been proclaimed by the President of Uzbekistan.

Plans to repeal the region’s ability to secede caused an unusual outbreak of violence. President Mirziyoyev visited Karakalpakstan twice over the weekend.

Dmitry Peskov, the Spokesperson for the Kremlin, stated on Monday that Russia has no doubt that the Uzbek government will make efforts to address the problems the country is currently experiencing.

During a press conference in Moscow, when asked if Moscow is keeping track of the developments in Uzbekistan, Peskov referred to the nation as Russia’s “ally and key partner” and said that what is taking place is an internal matter.

Peskov further stated that “Uzbekistan is a close friend, an ally, and a crucial partner for us.” Everything that occurs in Uzbekistan is a domestic matter for this nation.

“We are certain that all current issues will be handled with the active efforts of Uzbekistan’s leadership,”.
