Islamabad, 24 September 2021 (TDI): Asian Development Bank Pakistan shared the news on its Twitter account that explains how early warning and flash flood forecasts helped in saving lives and fighting poverty. They have also attached a blog that explains how new technologies have helped in creating an effective risk management system.
The blog explains that the Asia and Pacific region is facing a number of climate challenges like floods both in urban and rural settings. The countries affected by the recent disastrous floods are The People’s Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Nepal.
However, the blog explains the factors that are causing this extreme flash flood. Factors like rainfall are a key trigger but urbanizations, flood-prone land are also major causes of these floods. It is necessary to get cost-effective and affordable flash flood risk management measures to avoid these disastrous floods.
The affordable and cost-effective approaches to avoid these are dikes, dams, flash flood forecasting, and early warning systems. It is needed to avoid extreme consequences because mostly there is a very short time available for warning, responding, and preparing for floods.
Technologies like denser hydro-meteorological monitoring networks and real-time data acquisition and transmission are required for flash flood forecasting and early warning management. Though the 21st-century technology advances help in making these measures most effective and ensuring the safety of the people these technologies are yet to be integrated with the effective risk management system to developing countries in the Asia and Pacific region.
