Taliban Hails Kyrgyzstan Removing Afghanistan from Banned List

-

KABUL, September 05, 2024 (TDI): The Afghan Taliban on Thursday welcomed Kyrgyzstan’s decision to remove the name of the “Emirate of Islamia” from its banned list of organizations, although the Kyrgyz government has not yet issued a public statement on the matter.

In a press release, Afghan Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi praised the move, calling it a commendable step.

He said that this action by Kyrgyzstan, along with similar steps by other countries, contributes to fostering political understanding in the region and strengthening bilateral relations between the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and other nations.

Despite this positive development, no country has formally recognized the Afghan Taliban government nearly three years after it regained control of Afghanistan, leaving the group isolated on the global stage.

A recent report by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) raised concerns over the ongoing “terrorist threat” from militant groups operating in Afghanistan.

While the Council members agree on the need for a peaceful, terrorism-free Afghanistan, they remain divided on how to achieve this. The Global terrorist group Islamic State (IS) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan are operating in Afghanistan.

Countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with other like-minded nations, continue to stress that the Taliban must comply with international standards.

This would help Afghans to secure recognition and access to economic and development aid, according to the UNSC report.

A day earlier, Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi had expressed optimism about improvements in Kabul’s diplomatic relations.

Muttaqi, who is on a diplomatic mission to Türkiye following the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Cameroon, met with Afghan diplomats in Istanbul.
