Switzerland, Pakistan to host conference on Agriculture Sustainability

-

Islamabad, 20 August 2021 (TDI): Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan and Afghanistan, Ambassador Bénédict de Cerjat announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan and the Swiss Embassy in Islamabad are to host a scientific exchange on agriculture sustainability and climate change. Among the guest speakers are Dr. Shahid Monsoor, Dr. Bernard Lehmann, Dr. Urs Niggli, and Mr. Abdul Rahim Ahmad.

Pakistan is an agricultural country. Agriculture plays an important role in the country’s economy and development as it provides food to people, raw materials for export, and other industries. About 39% of the country’s workforce is engaged in agriculture and accounts for 18.5% of the country’s GDP, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Over time, agricultural production has been limited and more costly for the environment for several reasons such as old farming patterns, climate change, and increasing water scarcity. The joint conference will focus on new technologies to be used in the sector for sustainability in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals 12, 13, and 17.
