Islamabad (TDI): The Ambassador of Sweden to Pakistan, Alexandra Berg von Linde, visited the historic salt mine in Khewra and admired Pakistan’s beauty.
The Khewra salt mine is a very profound symbol of Pakistan’s heritage and tourism as it is the second largest salt mine in the world.
The mine attracts local and national tourists year round; their number as high as 250000, annually. For everyone visiting, the mine presents itself as a marvel, decorated inside with lights and preserved as a national symbol.

Shedding light on the history of the salt mine, Ambassador Linde posted on X, “DYK? The mine was discovered by the horses of Alexander the Great in 230 BC when they were found licking the salty stones! Amazing.”
She also shared with her audience that she got herself some pink salt too. In and around the mine, a variety of sellable decorative products made with salt are available. Tourists visiting the mine purchase these items as memoirs of their visit.
The mine, as mysterious and aw-inspiring it is, houses a six-bed hospital for asthma patients. Salt mines help ease breathing and are a heaven for people who suffer from asthma.

Asthma patients can stay in the bedded-facility for 8-10 hours a day. The mine is spread over twelve levels, half of which are below the surface.
The salt extracted from the mine is processed in industrial units set up near the mine. The mine’s Himalayan Pink Salt stands out and is globally sought after.
A separate area inside the salt mine has been designed for tourists, as the mine itself is long and deep. The tunnel in the mine is forty kilometers in depth.
