Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government held on Guinea

Accra, 17 September 2021 (TDI): Economic Community of the West African States (ECOWAS) held an extraordinary summit of the Head of States and Head of Government to discuss the Socio-Political situation in Guinea and crafting measures to resolve the issues.
Following the week-old coup in Guinea, the ECOWAS authority decided to impose economic sanctions and travel ban until and unless the situation in the country returns to normal. The purpose of the meeting was to take on board the prominent actors of Guinea to discuss a peaceful settlement in the country.

During the emergency meeting, the ECOWAS authority demanded the immediate release of President Alpha Conde and asked to conduct elections within the next 6 months. The ECOWAS has also decided to freeze all financial assets of Military Janta of Guinea and imposed a travel ban on the members of Guinea’s Janta. In-Toto, the conference emphasized diplomatic means to resolve Guinea’s ongoing situation.
