Glasgow, 2 November 2021 (TDI): On Monday, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa addressed the 26th summit of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, United Kingdom. He highlighted the core factors required to tackle climate change and urged the need for sustainable nitrogen management.
President Rajapaksa expressed great pleasure over attending the UN conference and acknowledged that climate change has become one of the biggest problems of the world. While addressing the session in Scotland, he urged the political leaders attending the summit to work together and bring a positive change to the planet.
In addition, the Sri Lankan President highlighted the importance of the Colombo Declaration in Sustainable Management during his address. He also encouraged the summit’s participants to develop national roadmaps for sustainable nitrogen management.
While discouraging the overuse of nitrogen, Gotabaya Rajapaksa shared that it has caused chronic kidney diseases in Sri Lanka, given which his government banned the imports of nitrogen to control the further spread of such diseases.
He further added that the world should use modern ways of agriculture, besides trying to reduce the uses of nitrogen that causes environmental degradation. Lastly, he stressed that the world leaders are custodians of Earth so they must take substantial measures to save the planet from climatic threats.
The United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP26) started on October 31 in Glasgow and will continue till November 12, bringing together the world leaders to address the climate crisis. The summit aims to gather the member states to discuss and solve the emerging issues related to climate change.
