Colombo, 11 August 2022 (TDI): UAE’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Khaled Nasser Al-Ameri met with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka, Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry briefed UAE’s Ambassador about the recent economic situation in Sri Lanka. He also shed light on the respective actions taken by the government so far as to increase the flexibility of the country’s economic situation.

While further elaborating on the economic situation, Ali Sabry also invited UAE to engage in broader economic collaboration in the fields of trade, agriculture, and investment.

UAE Ambassador’s remarks

Ambassador Khaled Nasser Al-Ameri congratulated Ali Sabry on his appointment as Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka.

He also emphasized U.A.E-Sri Lanka bilateral relations and assured every possible support to the Sri Lankan government at this challenging time.

The Ambassador conveyed the UAE’s strong commitment to increased cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, and investment with Sri Lanka amid the country’s economic crisis.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, while referring to decades of cordial relations between both countries thanked the UAE ambassador for continued assistance and cooperation extended by the UAE during challenging times.

Ongoing Economic Crisis in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is facing i’s biggest economic crisis since its independence in 1948. Rising prices of commodities, power shortages, record high inflation, severe fuel crisis, and the economic collapse go hand in hand, as the country is crippled with political turmoil.

Following the economic and political collapse, Sri Lankans have taken to the streets in record numbers to protest economic hardships.

Sri Lanka- UAE bilateral relations

Sri Lanka and UAE enjoy very cordial relations with each other in all areas including investment, tourism, trade, and economic cooperation.

The UAE is the biggest export as well as import market for Sri Lanka in the Gulf (GCC) region. The year 2019, marked the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the UAE and Sri Lanka.

In recent years, bilateral relations between the two countries significantly evolved to become a friendly and privileged relationship.
