Sri Lanka-Bahrain First Political Consultation Meeting

Colombo, 23 October 2021 (TDI): The First Session of Political Consultations between Sri Lanka and Bahrain was held by virtual platform. The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Foreign Secretary, Jayanath Colombage. The Bahrain side was led by the Undersecretary of the Bahrain Foreign Ministry, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Ali Khalifa.

Context:

In 2009, The MOU on Political Consultations was signed between Sri Lanka and Bahrain. This session was arranged to further develop bilateral relations. They also exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest.

Avenues of cooperation:
During the meeting, both sides identified new avenues of cooperation. It includes trade, investment, manpower, education, culture, tourism, health, agriculture, skill development, and vocational training for mutual benefit. Further, the meeting proposed to enter into new bilateral agreements. Moreover, Both sides agreed to revisit the signed agreements to formalize such cooperation in the identified areas.

The Bahrain delegation briefed about the contributions of the Sri Lankan migrant workers. It also mentioned their commitment to the welfare and free vaccination of Migrant workers. Jayanath Colombage thanked the Bahrain Government for facilitating the Sri Lankan migrant workers. He also appreciated Bahrain’s kind gesture of facilitating workers with a free vaccination. He mentioned that Sri Lanka is willing to explore employment opportunities in Bahrain for the skilled and semi-skilled Sri Lankans. The Second Session of the Political consultation between Sri Lanka and Bahrain will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2022.
