Kabul, 7 August 2021 (TDI): A special emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, presided over by T S Tirumurti the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, was held at the request of Afghan Foreign Minister, Haneef Atmar on Friday, 6 August 2021.

Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons briefed the participants about the increasing ferocity of the Taliban and the mayhem in Afghanistan. She stated that the situation of Afghanistan will soon be like that of Syria or Sarajevo if the International Community does not stand up against the atrocities of Taliban and take measures to counter them. Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the UN, Ghulam M. Isaczai also protested against the brutality of Afghanistan while reporting that Taliban are intransigent in their behaviors and decisions; they are not ready to make any concessions for the peace talks. He stated that the Taliban have become more violent and people of the country do not wish to go back to the Taliban’s rule. The President of UNSC, T S Tirumurti underscored that there is no military solution for the brawl in Afghanistan, thereby, Taliban must reside in a political settlement and restrain from strengthening their ties with Al Qaeda.

All the UNSC members including Ireland, Norway, and the UK extended their full support to Afghan civilians and Ashraf Ghani’s legitimate Government. All the members expressed concerns about severe Human Rights Violations and deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan.
