Beijing, 4 September 2024 (TDI): Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is set to visit China from September 8 to 11, in a move expected to bolster practical cooperation and reflect a shared commitment among European nations to foster a stable relationship with Beijing.
The visit comes at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, according to an announcement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday.
During his visit, Sanchez will hold talks with Chinese officials on bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest.
Several key events, including the China-Spain Forum, the China-Spain Business Advisory Council Meeting, and the China-Spain Business Forum, are also on the agenda.
China hopes the visit will further advance bilateral ties, deepen mutual trust, and enhance cooperation on global challenges, Mao noted. “We aim to add new dimensions to the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership,” she added.
Cui Hongjian, a professor at the Academy of Regional and Global Governance, Beijing Foreign Studies University, remarked that Sanchez’s visit underscores a consensus between China and Europe to promote high-level interactions and stabilize relations.
Cui emphasized that economic and trade exchanges will be a key focus of the talks, particularly in areas such as manufacturing, infrastructure, new energy, and green transformation.
Trade Fractions
He also noted that the two sides are likely to address how to manage trade frictions, especially in light of recent EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

Sanchez’s visit, Cui argued, sends a strong message that European countries, including Spain, are keen to maintain a healthy and stable relationship with China.
“This will help bolster global confidence in the stability of major power ties amidst ongoing shifts on world level,” he said.
