South Korea’s YPP to Invest $3.1B in Green Hydrogen Project in Kazakhstan

Astana (TDI): South Korea’s YPP Corporation has agreed to invest up to $3.1 billion in a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Kazakhstan, following the signing of a framework deal with the national investment promotion agency, Kazakh Invest.

The document was signed by Kazakh Invest Deputy Chairman Azamat Kozhanov and YPP Corporation Chairman John M. Bek.

Under the plan, YPP will build a “Green Energy Complex” that includes solar and wind power installations with a combined capacity of up to 2 gigawatts. These will supply power to electrolysis systems and ammonia synthesis facilities capable of producing up to 75,000 tons of green hydrogen and 310,000 tons of green ammonia annually.

The bulk of the output is intended for export, but part of the production will be allocated for domestic use. The complex will also include supporting infrastructure, such as energy storage, logistics, water supply, and potential integration into Kazakhstan’s local heat and power systems, particularly in the Almaty region.

“This initiative directly supports our national energy strategy and reflects our goal to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market,” said Kozhanov. He highlighted Kazakhstan’s renewable energy potential, noting an estimated 1,820 billion kWh from wind and 2.5 billion kWh from solar sources annually.

YPP founder John M. Bek emphasized the country’s strategic value. “Kazakhstan offers the right mix of natural resources, policy stability, and investment climate. We’re excited to bring Korean innovation and global sustainability expertise to this venture,” he said.
