South Africa's national women's football team lifts Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Rabat, 26 July 2022 (TDI): South Africa lifted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy.

The country’s national women’s football team, popularly known as Banyana Banyana, won their first ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco on 23 July 2022.

The Victory

For the South African nation, this was one of the most joyous moments as it has recently won a rugby world cup, and now Banyana Banyana’s win made not only the supporters of women’s football but the whole nation proud.

This victory came to Banyana after facing many defeats in the past. And especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when everything along with sports had come to a standstill this win by Banyana Banyana has surely elevated the spirits of sports fans around the world.

Banyana Banyana’s player Hildah Magaia scored two defeating goals against Morocco. Even though they faced tough competition from Fatima Tagnaout of Morocco.

High-level felicitations 

The country’s president Cyril Ramaphosa also applauded the team. He took to Twitter to show Banyana Banyana some appreciation “They promised me that they would bring the trophy home. We cannot wait to welcome you back and thank you for flying the flag!”

The coach of the South African team, Desiree Ellis, dedicated the award to the people of South Africa. He added that it was also for everyone in South Africa connected to women’s football.

When the South African football team players arrived at the airport today, they had a glorious welcome, with fans congratulating them upon arrival. The scene at the OR Tambo Airport was colorful, with people from all walks of life praising Banyana Banyana.
