Cape Town (TDI): On 6 February 2025, the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, delivered the State of the Nation Address, SONA2025, at Cape Town city hall, marking his first speech in the Government of National Unity formed after the 2024 elections. The theme of the address was “A nation that works, for all,” the president detailed a plan to stimulate economic growth and address critical national issues.

Economic Growth and Job Creation
Intending to revitalize the economy, the president announced an upcoming “second wave of reforms”. The reforms aim to increase economic growth by 3%. The priority areas include the energy sector, mining, tourism, and efficient public service. Another area meriting great attention was the performance of state-owned enterprises such as Eskom and Transnet. SOEs are considered indispensable for a country’s economic infrastructure hence much due importance has been given to this sector.
Infrastructure Investment
An infrastructure construction plan worth a total of nearly 940 billion rand (approximately $50 billion) was announced by the president. This massive investment will seed new projects and upgrade existing facilities, thereby fostering an efficient public service delivery. The investment will prove to be a catalyst for economic activity and enhance over social and economic fabric of the country.
Social Development Initiatives
In combating social challenges, president Ramaphosa mapped out initiatives for poverty reduction and alleviating high the cost of living. He underlined the significance of developing a competent, ethical, developmental state as essential to the successful implementation of envisioned initiatives ensuring their outreach to underserved segments of the population.

International Relations and G20 Presidency
On the international stage, South Africa takes over the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) with the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”. This historic occasion marks the first time that an African member hosted the G20. Mr. Ramaphosa called to attention the due need for Africa and Global South’s equal participation in the international development agenda.

Tribute to Fallen Soldiers
The address began with a solemn tribute to South African soldiers who lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. President Ramaphosa honored their sacrifice for peace and security on the African continent, at the same time reaffirming South Africa’s belief in silencing guns for everlasting peace and stability.
