New York, 11 June 2022 (TDI): Slovenia was elected to United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) for the first time since joining the United Nations.

Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude to the UN Member States for their support as the country looks forward to working towards implementing the 2030 Agenda. As well as contributing to finding solutions to global challenges.

ECOSOC

In 1945 the UN Charter established ECOSOC as part of the six main organs of the United Nations.

Thus, it is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development. Namely economic, social and environmental.

The Economic and Social Council is the central platform for fostering debate as well as innovative thinking. Along with forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.

ECOSOC also brings people and issues together in order to promote collective action for a sustainable world.

By being at the center of the UN development system, ECOSOC conducts cutting-edge analysis, agrees on global norms, and advocates for progress.

Most importantly, its collective solutions advance sustainable development. Likewise, ECOSOC has the responsibility for following up on major UN conferences and summits.

In relation to coordination within the UN, ECOSOC connects a diverse family of subsidiary bodies and UN entities (Organigram).

That is, dedicated to sustainable development, offering overall guidance and coordination.

Moreover, the General Assembly resolutions 68/1, 72/305, and 75/290 A, strengthened ECOSOC’s leading role.

Especially in identifying emerging challenges, promoting innovation, and achieving a balanced integration of the three pillars. That includes economic, social, and environmentally sustainable development.

In terms of partnerships, ECOSOC is a gateway for UN partnership and participation by the rest of the world.

Moreover, every year, it structures its work around an annual theme of global importance to sustainable development.

Through the emphasis on economic, social, and environmental concerns, ECOSOC encourages agreement on coherent actions and policies that create essential connections across all three.
