PM Shehbaz Urges Dialogue, Global Cooperation at Ashgabat Forum

Ashgabat (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while addressing a major international gathering in Ashgabat on Friday, highlighted the importance of resolving global disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

The event marked the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025, the International Day of Neutrality, and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s officially recognised neutrality. PM Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan has always believed in peaceful settlement of conflicts. Speaking about the Middle East, he reiterated Islamabad’s support for the Gaza peace initiative and its recent endorsement by the UN Security Council. He expressed hope that the ongoing efforts would pave the way for a lasting ceasefire, uninterrupted humanitarian assistance, and rebuilding of Gaza.

On the long-standing issues of Palestine and Kashmir, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to backing all initiatives aimed at securing the right to self-determination for both Palestinians and Kashmiris. Turning to regional security, he urged the global community to press the Afghan Taliban authorities to honour their international commitments and prevent militant groups from using Afghan soil.

PM Shehbaz also drew a link between peace and sustainable growth, saying the 2030 Agenda offers a roadmap for a more stable and prosperous world. He noted that the welfare of citizens remained his government’s top priority, highlighting efforts to expand financial inclusion and integrate women and marginalized groups into the economy.

Addressing climate-related challenges, he said Pakistan has shown strong intent by promoting eco-friendly solutions and undertaking restoration projects. However, he pointed out that developing nations, including Pakistan, continue to face hurdles due to climate-induced disasters and unequal global economic structures. Calling climate change, poverty and inequality “borderless challenges,” he stressed that collective responsibility and fair access to technology are essential to tackle them.

On regional connectivity, he remarked that infrastructure projects should not only facilitate trade but also foster people-to-people links and shared prosperity. He emphasized the need for a unified international approach to build a peaceful future grounded in trust and cooperation.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister, accompanied by Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and other leaders participating in the forum, visited the Monument of Neutrality in Ashgabat. He laid a floral wreath at the site, acknowledging Turkmenistan’s longstanding policy of neutrality.

The forum, drawing high-level representation from various countries, seeks to encourage dialogue-based solutions to global challenges. State broadcaster PTV aired the prime minister’s visit and released video footage of the ceremony.

He congratulated the Turkmen president on the anniversary of his country’s neutrality and on the UN’s decision to designate 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. The Pakistani delegation also includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Energy Minister Awais Leghari, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and senior officials.
