Islamabad (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday held a telephone conversation with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, offering solidarity and “all possible” assistance as Malaysia grapples with the devastation caused by cyclone-induced floods.
Over the past week, monsoon rains combined with two tropical storm systems have unleashed record-breaking deluges across Sri Lanka, Indonesia’s Sumatra, southern Thailand, and northern Malaysia. The floods and landslides across the affected regions have resulted in over 1,000 deaths.
PM Shehbaz, speaking on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, conveyed heartfelt condolences over the loss of lives, injuries, and widespread destruction of property. He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and the safe return of all displaced citizens.
Expressing complete solidarity with the Malaysian people, the prime minister assured that Pakistan stands ready to extend whatever assistance Malaysia may require for its ongoing relief and rescue operations.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting Malaysia, saying the country “will provide whatever assistance is needed in the relief operations.”
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim thanked PM Shehbaz for his expression of sympathy and timely outreach, describing it as a reflection of the long-standing brotherly ties between Pakistan and Malaysia.
Earlier this week, Pakistan also dispatched an urban search and rescue team to Sri Lanka to support relief efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, which has claimed over 450 lives there.
In recent years, Pakistan has consistently emphasized the importance of regional cooperation during natural disasters, highlighting that climate-driven catastrophes demand collective action rather than isolated national responses. Officials in Islamabad maintain that building stronger humanitarian linkages with friendly countries is essential for ensuring timely and effective relief during crises.

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events across Asia has also underscored the urgency for enhanced collaboration on climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and early-warning systems. Pakistan has repeatedly called for global attention to the disproportionate impact of climate change on developing nations, many of which lack the resources needed to manage large-scale calamities.
As Pakistan continues to extend assistance to disaster-hit countries, officials stress that such efforts reflect the country’s commitment to shared responsibility, regional solidarity, and longstanding bonds with partner nations. Humanitarian cooperation, they say, remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and a vital tool for strengthening bilateral relationships.
