Washington, 11 June 2024(TDI): Secretary General of ASEAN Dr. Kao Kim Hourn kicked off to Washington, D.C to bolster the collaboration between the US and ASEAN particularly in US-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and cybersecurity cooperation.
The Secretary-General convened multiple high-level meetings with US officials and private stakeholders to emphatically reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the United States to supporting ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific region.
Kao Kim Hourn met with Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell in Washington strengthening the ongoing US-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and bringing progress in the 36th US-ASEAN dialogue in Washington.
Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell firmly restated the United States’ unwavering support for the objectives and principles of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in ensuring the safe and secure passage of trade across the region. Both sides strongly voiced their support for Laos, the current chair of ASEAN.

The Secretary-General of ASEAN held a meeting with the US Deputy National Security Advisor Anne Neuberger. They exchanged views on the expansion of the ASEAN-U.S. cooperation on cybersecurity and emerging technologies, among others.
Secretary General Kim Hourn conducted a discussion with the US Special Advisor on International Disability Rights, Sara Minakara, to discuss advancing disability rights across ASEAN. The discussions focused on strengthening ASEAN-U.S. cooperation in promoting equal opportunities and fostering a more accessible region for persons with disabilities.
US-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
In the 2022 US-ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh, the United States and ASEAN took the historic step of upgrading our relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
The main objectives of this partnership include facilitating official US-ASEAN engagements and building deeper habits of cooperation between ASEAN and the full range of US departments and agencies.
Enhancing connectivity among ASEAN and the US private sector, with particular attention to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as civil society.
Arranging cultural and educational activities aimed at strengthening ties among the combined one billion people of the United States and ASEAN, and Researching to support and elevate the substantive work of the US-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
