SCO, UN Chiefs Discuss Expanding Cooperation

Tianjin (TDI): Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin on Sunday.

Guterres is in China to take part in the “SCO Plus” session, which brings together non-member states and international organizations.

During the meeting, Yermekbayev underlined that SCO countries view the UN as the central multilateral body for safeguarding peace and security and promoting sustainable development.

He expressed the organization’s willingness to deepen cooperation with UN agencies through joint projects and events aimed at tackling common challenges.

For his part, Guterres congratulated Yermekbayev on his new role and praised the “positive momentum” in SCO–UN engagement, describing the outlook for future collaboration as promising.

The SCO chief also shared plans to attend the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York, where he will advance a resolution on SCO–UN cooperation and highlight preparations for the next meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State.

Both sides agreed to continue exchanging views on pressing regional and global issues. The meeting was described as cordial and constructive.

The SCO has maintained ties with the United Nations for over two decades. The UN General Assembly granted the organization observer status in 2004, and in 2010 the two secretariats signed a joint declaration on cooperation.
