Athens, 27 July 2022 (TDI): The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, arrived in Greece on Tuesday. He met with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.


The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, held an official reception ceremony for the Crown Prince.


Signing of MoU

Saudi Arabia and Greece signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in several areas related to the energy sector.

According to a press release by the Saudi Press Agency, the MoU includes cooperation in the energy field, cyber security, electricity exports of Greece and Europe, and clean hydrogen and oil transfer.

Furthermore, it also comprises adopting a circular economy to reduce the effects of climate change.

Also, The two countries also agreed on joint research with universities in the energy field. Besides, Multilateral conferences, seminars, working sessions, and panel discussions will be organized to build human capacities through training and exchanging experiences and information related to various energy fields.

In the presence of Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Foreign Minister of Greece, Minister Nikos Dendias, and the Energy Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Abdulaziz Bin Salman, exchanged the Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Energy.


Bilateral Relations: 

Greece and Saudi Arabia established diplomatic relations in 1962. Greece has an embassy in Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia has an embassy in Athens.

Greece’s embassy was established in Jiddah in 1943 but later moved to Riyadh in 1963.

In 2017, Greek Prime Minister Prokopios Pavlopoulos, along with his eleven Ministers and top businessmen, met the Saudi Prince in Riyadh. This ushered in a new era of cooperation between the two countries.

In December 2021, Greece and Saudi Arabia signed a maritime transport agreement in London.

Both countries enjoy cordial relations.

Later this week, the Saudi Prince is also expected to visit France.
