KABUL (TDI): The Saudi authorities announced on Monday that its embassy in Kabul had resumed all activities after a halt of over three years.
The Saudi embassy had halted its operation in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in August 2021.
“On the directives of the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to provide All services to the brotherly people of Afghanistan, it has been decided to resume the activities of the Saudi mission in Kabul starting on December 22,” the embassy posted on social media site X.

On August 15, 2021, Riyadh announced the withdrawal of its diplomats from Kabul, citing the “unstable situation” following the Taliban’s return to power. The country only resumed only consular services in Afghanistan in November 2021 and has since been providing humanitarian assistance through its KSRelief organization.

Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic shift comes weeks after the Russian parliament approved legislation to potentially remove the Taliban from Moscow’s list of banned terrorist organizations.
It should be noted that no country has formally recognized the Taliban government to date.
