SAPM Tariq Fatemi Meets António Guterres and UNGA President

New York (TDI): Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Tariq Fatemi, in two separate high-level meeting, met the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres, and the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Yang.

On his diplomatically important visit to New York, Pakistan’s seasoned diplomat and Special Assistant to the PM, has held significant meetings with the UN’s executive staff as well as ambassadors of other countries.

In meeting with the UN Secretary General, Pakistan’s ongoing two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council was discussed at length.

UNSG António Guterres thanked Pakistan for active engagement with the UN system, especially the Peacekeeping framework.

They discussed a range of other issues, including Pakistan’s priorities during its term, the situation in Gaza, terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, the future of UN Peacekeeping, and the Pact for the Future – UN’s futuristic plan and vision of a safer world.

SAPM also briefed the Secretary General on development, financial debt, reform of the international financial architecture,  and India’s denial of self-determination to Kashmiris in IIOJK.

In a prior meeting the President of the UN General Assembly, Tariq Fatemi “highlighted that Pakistan believes that the Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group’s proposal for creating more non-permanent members, with equitable geographical representation, elected to ensure accountability, is the best option.”

“Pakistan supported a more democratic, representative, accountable, and transparent Security Council, achieved through a consensual and broad-based process that enjoyed the widest possible support of UN Member States,” he noted regarding the reform agenda and Pakistan’s position on it.

He also conveyed Pakistan’s sentiments on Israel’s brutalities on Palestinians and said that Pakistan firmly believes there is no other way to lasting peace in Middle east except the formation of an independent Palestinian state.

A few days ago, SAPM Fatemi also met key US lawmakers in Washington. Pakistan-US relations remained the focus of these meetings while bilateral cooperation and economic ties also came under discussion.

In the meetings, Pakistan also expressed its desire to work with the United States in trade and investment sectors.
