Samarkand’s SCO summit yielded positive results- Chinese spokesperson

Beijing, 1 November 2022 (TDI): Today, the meeting was conducted by video link to host the 21st meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG).

As per Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Li Keqiang, the State Council’s Premier, was serving as the event’s host in Beijing.

Lijian made the announcement during his press briefing held on Monday.

The heads of state and government from SCO member states and observer states attended the session upon invitation.

Participants included the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the SCO Entrepreneurs’ Committee, and the SCO Interbank Consortium.

The 21st SCO-CHG summit also hosted participants from more international institutions and organisations.

China’s expectations for the meeting

On asking about the expectations from the 21st meeting of SCO-CHG, Zhao Lijian said,Since its founding, the SCO has followed the Shanghai Spirit, promoted good neighborliness and friendship among its members,”

He also believed that SCO has “deepened cooperation in various areas, and played an important role in maintaining the security and stability of the Eurasian continent and boosting the development and prosperity of regional countries.”

He also said that this year’s SCO summit in Samarkand in September yielded positive results.

He stressed, the SCO summit of Samarkand has shown how to move the SCO development project ahead, as the Chinese President himself attended the meeting and met the head of states.

Samarkand hosted a meeting of the Council of Heads of SCO member states on September 15–16, 2022. Meetings were held during this occasion to consider new priorities for multilateral cooperation within the Organization as well as to exchange opinions on current concerns on the regional and global agenda.

President Xi Jinping gave a significant address, engaged in in-depth discussion with other leaders about the SCO’s cooperation in different sectors and the most pressing global and regional concerns, and came to a number of significant agreements.

The Chinese spokesperson highlighted that the global pandemic epidemic which the world hasn’t been seen in a century, changes, and a weak economy are all affecting the world.

Hence, the SCO must show a strong sense of responsibility and make even greater contributions to safeguarding national security and development interests, in the opinion of the countries in the region.

He further said, in the light of aforementioned concerns Premier Li Keqiang will engage in a thorough discussion with other leaders about how to implement the outcomes of the summit in September and advance SCO security, economic, and cultural cooperation.

While mentioning his expectations from the meeting, he told that the Premier will also look into new concepts and strategies for enhancing the SCO’s mutually beneficial cooperation.

He was confident about the next summit that it actively assist nations in addressing a variety of dangers and difficulties, encourage economic growth, and provide more noticeable advantages to all parties involved.
