SADC reaffirms support to the people of Mozambique

Kinshasa, 18 August 2022 (TDI): The 42nd Ordinary South African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Government is underway from 17th-18th August 2022 in Kinshasa.

The two-day Summit took place under the theme of “Promoting Industrialization through, agro-processing, mineral beneficiation, and regional value chains for inclusive and resilient economic growth”.

Mozambique is dealing with a militant insurgency in its northern provinces. SADC Summit received updates regarding the security situation in Cabo Delgado Province.

It is situated in the northern part of the Republic of Mozambique. The Summit approved the extension of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) and its related processes.

SADC Summit commended SAMIM Personnel Contributing Countries (PCCs) for their solidarity and sacrifice in supporting the mission.

It also expressed condolences to the governments and families of nine deceased SAMIM personnel who died during operations in Cabo Delgado Province.

The regional force SAMIM alongside forces from Rwanda has managed to win back territory from the rebel forces.

SADC Peacebuilding Mission

The Peacebuilding Support to the Republic of Mozambique provides support in collaboration with humanitarian agencies. It continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the people affected by terrorist activities.

SADC Mission in Mozambique focuses on capacity building of Police and Correctional Services officers, and women and youth empowerment workshops. Moreover, dialogues with civic leaders in five districts of Cabo Delgado Province were held in July 2022.

In addition, the peacebuilding support mission of SADC in Mozambique involves support initiatives in various areas.

It includes the promotion of human rights, gender equality, good governance, democracy, rights of indigenous people, children’s rights, and environmental sustainability.

At the end of the Summit, all the members agreed to work in collaboration for peace and security in Mozambique.
