Beijing, 6 September 2024 (TDI): Rwanda’s partnership with China is built on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests, leading to significant achievements in areas such as poverty reduction, infrastructure development, and more, Rwandan President Paul Kagame said.
During his visit to Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), President Kagame emphasized the value of this partnership.
President Kagame, who has visited China multiple times and attended the 2006 and 2018 Beijing FOCAC summits, described the forum as a crucial platform for strengthening China-Africa relations.
“China’s approach to Africa, characterized by sincerity, real results, amity, and good faith, resonates strongly with Rwanda’s values,” he stated.
Highlighting China’s role as a dependable partner, Kagame praised its commitment to supporting Africa’s development without imposing its will.
“This model of cooperation is one that we deeply appreciate and seek to continue,” he said.
He further noted that the collaboration between China and Rwanda has produced tangible outcomes, especially in reducing poverty and improving infrastructure.
China Rwanda’s Largest Trading Partner
“China has become one of Rwanda’s largest trading partners, and our countries have deepened cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, green development, and digitalization,” Kagame remarked.
The President underscored the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in enhancing Rwanda’s infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.
He cited several key projects, including road networks across Rwanda, the Institute of Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC) Musanze campus in the Northern Province, and the Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant, which have directly improved livelihoods and supported economic growth.

Looking ahead, Kagame expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in the digital economy, renewable energy, and agricultural modernization.
He shared his admiration for China’s rapid development and modernization, particularly in infrastructure and technology, which serves as an inspiration for Rwanda’s growth trajectory.
Kagame also highlighted the similarities between the two nations, noting that both have overcome significant challenges to achieve remarkable progress. “Both Rwanda and China prioritize long-term planning, social stability, and the well-being of their citizens,” he observed.
However, the President acknowledged that while China’s development model offers valuable lessons, Rwanda must adapt these experiences to its unique context, considering cultural, social, and economic realities.
“Localization of Chinese experiences requires careful consideration,” he added.
