Moscow, 3 September 2024, (TDI): On September 3rd every year, the Russian Federation marks the solemn occasion of the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism. It serves as a day of remembrance and reflection for the countless lives lost to acts of terrorism across Russia.
Terrorist Incidents in Russia
Russian Federation has witnessed several horrific terrorist incidents including but not limited to the Beslan school siege, the Dubrovka Theatre hostage crisis, and the Budyonnovsk hospital siege. Besides, bombings in Moscow, Buinaksk, Volgodonsk, and other cities are also part of the tragic episodes of terrorism in Russia. These events have claimed thousands of precious lives of innocent Russian citizens and have long-term psychological impacts on the minds of its people to the present day.

What Happened on September 3 in Russian History?
One of the most horrific terrorist incidents in Russian history took place on September 1, 2004, when terrorists attacked School No. 1 in Beslan during a ceremonial assembly marking the start of the school year. Terrorists took an estimated 1,000 people, including children, parents, and teachers hostage and the siege continued for three days. Moreover, they laid explosives in the building which eventually blew up on September 3. The incident resulted in the deaths of dozens of Russian special forces involved in the rescue operation. This devastating incident resulted in the loss of 333 lives, including 186 children.
In response, the Russian government enacted the federal law “On Amendments to the Federal Law On Days of Military Glory (Victory Days) of Russia” on July 21, 2005. Consequently, September 3 was designated as the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism. The day serves as a commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and honouring the memory of those who have fallen victim to such senseless violence.
