Male, 16 August 2022 (TDI): The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Maldives, Yuri Materiy, called the Foreign Secretary of Maldives, Ahmed Latheef, on Monday.

Foreign Secretary Ahmad Latheef congratulated Russian Ambassador Yuri Materiy on the successful completion of his tenure. He appreciated his role in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

During the meeting, Foreign Secretary Latheef and the Russian Ambassador reviewed some of the key areas of bilateral cooperation and multilateral issues of mutual importance.

Both also insisted on deeper cooperation and hoped to have multiple engagements ahead regarding key issues.

Russia-Maldives bilateral cooperation

Maldives and Russia continue to cooperate on important issues at bilateral and multilateral fora, importantly in the field of trade, education, and investment. Deals signed between the two countries also include global areas of mutual importance.

Maldives and Russia project similar stances on most international issues. They give equal importance to enhancing interstate communication based on ideals of international law and the UN Charter.

The Republic of Maldives imports a large number of Russian agricultural products, most importantly poultry. On the other hand, the Russian Federation imports marine bioresources from the Republic of Maldives.

Cooperation in Tourism Sector 

Russia and Maldives enjoy robust cooperation in the tourism sector. Russia’s share in the tourism market of Maldives is about 23.3%. Every year the Maldives welcomes more than a hundred thousand Russian tourists.

With the signing of a mutual agreement on “Mutual Exemption of Visa requirements for nationals of the Republic of the Maldives and the Russian Federation”, people of both countries can freely enter each other’s territory without obtaining a prior visa and can stay up to 90 days.

As Ocean tourism is a future growth industry. Both Russian Federation and the Maldives tend to invest more in this sector and increase cooperation.
