Islamabad (TDI): In an interview with RIA Novosti, Russian state-owned local news agency, Russian Ambassador to Pakistan – Albert P. Khorev said that Russia welcomes and supports Pakistan’s desire to become a member of BRICS, the bloc that is now increasingly assuming the leadership of Global South.
This year’s BRICS Summit is scheduled for 6-7 July and will be held under Brazil’s Presidency. Recently, on 24-25 March, Brasilia hosted the 10th BRICS Policy Planning Dialogue.
BRICS – the intergovernmental group of emerging economies expanded last year when Egypt, Iran, United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia accepted the invitation to join the bloc, which was extended in the annual Summit of 2023.

As the newest member, Indonesia has joined BRICS this year. The expanded structure is often called the BRICS plus (BRICS+).
In 2023, Pakistan expressed a desire to join the bloc for the first time, which became more formalized last year. Russia fully supported Pakistan’s entry into BRICS then and has maintained its stance.
Ambassador Khorev, in his interview also said that Pakistan features significantly in the Eurasian Security Concept proposed by President Putin and that the Greater Eurasian Partnership includes Pakistan as a strong Russian partner.

He said that the upcoming 10th session of the Intergovernmental Commission in May will be very important for economic cooperation between Russia and Pakistan.
He further noted that the partnership between the two countries has survived the test of time and despite opposition from the West, Pakistan and Russia have become reliable partners.
He reiterated that Russia supports all counter-terrorism efforts and is keen to support Pakistan in every way possible.
