Russia Calls the Timing of Israel’s Attack on Iran ‘Cynical’

Moscow (TDI): In a statement regarding Israel’s attacks on Iran in the early morning hours of June 13, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia issued a detailed statement, expressing “concern regarding the dangerous escalation of tensions in the Middle East.”

“We strongly condemn the military actions undertaken by the State of Israel on the night of June 13, which constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter as well as established principles of international law,” the statement read.

It added that unprovoked strikes against critical nuclear energy infrastructure of another country are “unacceptable” as it jeopardizes regional as well as global security.

“The timing of these attacks appears to be particularly cynical as they have occurred amidst a session of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and just ahead of the next round of indirect talks between representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States,” the statement further remarked.

MFA Russia noted that Israel’s action have undermined all diplomatic efforts that have been ongoing to “eliminate suspicions and the bias surrounding Iran’s peaceful nuclear program” and that complete responsibility of all the consequences lies with Israel.

The Ministry also admitted the critical role and responsibility of IAEA: We are closely monitoring the actions by the IAEA… We expect the IAEA Director General to provide balanced and objective assessments of the current developments – in particular, a comprehensive analysis of the potential radiological consequences of the attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran.”

The statement blamed the Western countries for creating a hysteria around Iran’s nuclear program and for pushing IAEA towards biased decisions. “… the Western countries… will come to realize the dangerous consequences of their destructive approach as well as the degree of responsibility they bear for the unfolding tragedy.”

“We strongly believe that, regardless of any justifications that may be offered by those who planned, developed, and carried out the attacks, the issue of the Iranian nuclear program cannot and must not be resolved by military means. A sustainable settlement is only possible through peaceful, political, and diplomatic efforts,” the statement added.

As a concluding remark, it called for all countries to “exercise restraint to avoid further escalation and prevent a full-scale war in the region,” while also taking note of the Unites States willingness to continue the next round of talks with Iran, in Oman.
