Romanian National Day
This year marks the 104th anniversary of the Romanian National Day (1918-2022). This day marks the unification of Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom in 1918.
Romania’s complete independence had been recognized in 1878 but it consisted of Moldova and Wallachia at the time. In 1918, in the city of Alba Iulia, Romania was united with Transylvania, Crisana, Banat, and the Maramures area.
On December 1st, 1918, the National Assembly of Romanians of Transylvania and Hungary decreed the unification by a unanimous vote.
This resolution voted by the National Assembly also formed the “fundamental principles for the foundation of the new Romanian State”. Later on, December 11, 1918, King Ferdinand I of Romania signed the law.
The law decreed that “The lands named in the resolution of the Alba-Iulia National Assembly of the 18th of November 1918 are and remain forever united with the Kingdom of Romania”.
Since then, the day is celebrated with national fervor and zeal all across the country.
