Rashid Mahmood Langrial Selected As FBR Chairman

Islamabad, 7 August 2024 (TDI): Rashid Mahmood Langrial, the Federal Secretary for Energy, has been selected by the federal government to the position of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman.

The nomination of Langrial was announced by the administration on Wednesday.

Rashid Mahmood Langrial, a Grade 21 officer, held the position of Secretary of the Power Division before.

There had been a race to replace Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana both inside and outside the tax machinery, as sources had earlier indicated that the government was finalizing the appointment of the new FBR chairman after Tiwana sought an early retirement from service due to a falling out with the Prime Minister’s Office.

Six months before he would have turned sixty, Tiwana had requested to retire on August 15.

Even before he agreed to the budget, Tiwana was considering an early retirement due to persistent pressure and interference from the Prime Minister’s Office. But because of the budget exercise and the discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he decided not to make the move.

The direct involvement of the Prime Minister’s Office, the ongoing McKenzie project, and—above all—the need to demonstrate a 40% increase in tax collection under the IMF’s auspices in order to get Rs13 trillion in revenue make experts feel the new chairman’s job of leading the FBR would not be without difficulty.
