The relationship between the two countries was established long ago on a non-residential basis. Qatar’s Embassy in Washington represented Qatar in both US and Canada, and the Canadian Embassy in Kuwait represented Canada.

However, on 22 March 2011, the diplomatic relation between the countries moved to a residential basis upon the opening of Qatar’s Embassy in Ottawa, Canada.

The last decade witnessed a remarkable evolution in the relationship between the two countries, reflected by the sharing of similar views on political and regional matters.

Furthermore, an improvement in the commercial link was seen. The most essential export from Qatar is Liquefied petroleum gas to New Brunswick province on the east coast of Canada.

In the field of education, Canadian educational institutions were one of the first institutions that opened departments in Doha. The institutes include the College of the North Atlantic and The University of Calgary.

Likewise, in the health sector, SickKids hospital and Hamad Medical corporation have taken important steps toward opening a center in Doha.
