Geneva, 13 September 2023 (TDI): In a statement delivered at the 54th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the State of Qatar reiterated its dedication to promoting and safeguarding human rights in Sudan.

Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, emphasized Qatar’s commitment to Sudan’s stability, security, unity, and territorial integrity while standing in solidarity with the Sudanese people amidst their ongoing crisis.

 

Dr. Al Muftah stressed the significance of upholding human rights protections for the Sudanese population during both peacetime and conflict, underscoring that the immediate priority should be the cessation of hostilities.

She called for the restoration of security and meaningful dialogue as peaceful means to resolve the current crisis and prevent further suffering among the Sudanese people.

Qatar reaffirmed its support for the Joint Saudi-US Initiative and welcomed other regional and international efforts aimed at resolving the Sudanese crisis.

The State expressed hope for the success of these endeavors, highlighting its commitment to the pursuit of lasting peace in Sudan.

Furthermore, Dr. Al Muftah disclosed that Qatar has been closely monitoring the humanitarian situation in Sudan and has continuously provided essential humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people since the onset of the crisis.

She acknowledged Qatar’s response to the humanitarian plan in Sudan and its contributions to the regional plan for refugees, driven by moral and humanitarian duty, as well as its ongoing development efforts in Sudan.

In closing, she called upon all conflicting parties in Sudan to embrace reason, prioritize the public interest, and engage in dialogue as a means of resolving disputes.

She emphasized that a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement achieved through dialogue is the path toward realizing the Sudanese people’s aspirations for stability, development, and prosperity.
