Qatar Joins Official Talks to Bring 2036 Olympics to Middle East

Doha (TDI): The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) confirmed on Tuesday that they are part of the ongoing meetings to host the Olympics and Paralympics 2036 with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In 2022, Qatar hosted football’s World Cup, and in 2024, it hosted the Asia Cup and will be the first country in the Middle East to host the Olympics for the first time in 2036 after it confirmed bids from India, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile.

The President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, said to media that, “We currently have 95% of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities”.

“We have made sport a central pillar of our national strategy, and today, we aspire to elevate that role regionally and globally by presenting a new model – one that reflects the diversity of our region and celebrates its authentic human values”, he added.

He also said that this whole plan is based on a long-term vision and is focused on building a socially and economically sustainable legacy.

Many other countries have also shown interest in considering a bid that includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, South Korea, Germany, Denmark, Canada, and Italy.

In 2030, Qatar is set to host the Asian Games; meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is set to host the football World Cup in 2034.

Last month, the new IOC President, Kirsty Coventry, said that her organization is reviewing the process for determining Games hosts.

If successful, Qatar would be the first Gulf state of the Middle East to host this event. Though high temperature would be a concern and one of the reasons the 2022 World Cup was moved to December was due to extreme weather conditions.

It is also reported that the 2028 Summer Olympics are scheduled in Los Angeles and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.
