Prime Minister Pakistan felicitates on SAARC Charter Day

Islamabad, 9 December 2023 (TDI): On occasion of the 39th Charter Day of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Prime Minister of Pakistan Anwar-Ul-Haq Kakar issued a statement felicitating the member states of the organization. 

SAARC was established with the signing of the SAARC Charter in Dhaka on December 8, 1985. It comprises of eight Member States including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. 

In his statement, the Prime Minister expressed his heartiest congratulations to the SAARC member states and the people of South Asia. 

He stated that 8th December 1985 marked the day when leaders with vision and foresight adopted the SAARC Charter and pledged to work together for the progress and prosperity of the South Asian region. 

The day reminds us of the responsibility placed on our shoulders by our peoples to address the shared challenges including poverty, illiteracy, disease, and underdevelopment. 

He added that SAARC, without any doubt, has the immense potential to provide a sound framework to transform the lives of over two billion people residing in the region of South Asia. 

Furthermore, Pakistan, as being one of the founding members of the South Asian organization, has consistently shown its commitment to the objective of organization and has actively participated in the processes and activities of the organization. 

Pakistan is a firm believer in the strength and potential of regional cooperation for national and regional development. 

Moreover, Pakistan believes that result-oriented regional cooperation can be achieved only by adhering to the cardinal principles of soverign equality and mutual respect, as enshrined in the SAARC Charter. 

He reiterated the commitment of Pakistan to the SAARC process. He added that he is confident that the current hindrances to the organization’s smooth functioning will be removed. He commended the efforts by the SAARC Secretariat for smooth functioning of organization.

He wished the people of South Asia peace, progress, and prosperity. He urged the members to work together and realize the true potential of our region for the benefit of South Asia and the rest of the world.
