Kyiv, 17 August 2022 (TDI): The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema had bilateral talks over a telephonic call.
This was the first ever conversation between the presidents of Ukraine and Zambia throughout their bilateral diplomatic relations.

The President of Zambia showed interest in developing enhanced bilateral relations between Ukraine and Zambia. President Hichilema also showed determination and support for Ukraine’s integrity in its ongoing conflict with the Russian Federation.
Ukraine’s president, Zelensky also showed appreciation for the position of Zambia and its president. He also recognized Zambia’s support for Ukraine in international organizations.

Discussion on support from African States
During the call, President Zelensky emphasized that support for Zambia and other African nations is an important aspect for Ukraine on the international level.
He also stressed the safe evacuations of Zambian students by the authorities of Zambia, during the escalation of Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.
Ukrainian President also said that they are keen to increase cooperation and enhance relations with Zambia. Therefore, other than Zambia, President Zelensky also held telephonic conversations with presidents of other African states.
The bilateral talks with other heads of state in Africa include the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum. The discussions with African heads of state were regarding cooperation in international projects and grain supplies from Ukraine.
Zambia’s stance on Ukraine’s conflict with Russia
Zambia’s President, Hichilema stood critical of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier in March, he said that conflict should be stopped as it is having significant impacts on oil prices.
In the following conversation, the Zambian president stressed his point of view of support for cooperation. Along with this, he also stressed achieving regional peace and security for Ukraine and Russia.
He said that peace in the European continent is important for both Ukraine and Zambia. President emphasized his government’s support for achieving peace and recognizing its necessity for development and prosperity.
