President Xi hosts talks with President Bio of Sierra Leone

Beijing, 29 February 2024 (TDI): On February 28, President Xi Jinping of China welcomed President Bio of Sierra Leone for a state visit, hosting productive talks at the Great Hall of the People.

Highlighting the longstanding friendship between China and Sierra Leone, President Xi Jinping underscored the mutual support on core issues.

Joint efforts to tackle global challenges such as the Ebola and COVID-19 pandemics also came into view. This demonstration of China’s diplomacy reaffirmed its commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations with African nations.

President Xi reiterated China’s firm support for Sierra Leone’s development path, tailored to its national conditions.

Emphasizing the importance of governance exchanges and mutual support on major concerns, China pledged to provide assistance in agriculture, infrastructure, and human resources development, encouraging Chinese investment in Sierra Leone.

Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation within the UN Security Council to safeguard the interests of Africa and developing nations.

Addressing the broader partnership between China and Africa, President Xi emphasized solidarity and cooperation as pivotal to mutual development.

China commits to supporting Africa’s industrialization and agricultural modernization initiatives, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

The upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation presents an opportunity to further deepen bilateral and regional ties.

President Bio expressed gratitude for China’s steadfast support and commended China’s development achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party.

Sierra Leone reaffirmed its adherence to the one-China principle and pledged to enhance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, boosting infrastructure, trade, and education collaboration.

Both nations pledged to strengthen coordination on regional and global issues, promoting peace and development worldwide.

Following the talks, bilateral cooperation agreements were signed, further solidifying the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Sierra Leone.

The visit concluded with a warm welcome ceremony, a review of the honor guard, and a banquet hosted by President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan, signaling China’s diplomacy with Sierra Leone.
