Dar es Salaam, 3 August 2022 (TDI): President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema arrived in Tanzania on a one-day visit at the invitation of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He received a warm welcome characterized by traditional dances as well as a guard of honor that was mounted by the Tanzanian Defence Forces.

Agenda of the Meeting

Both leaders discussed several issues that have been hindering bilateral relations between Zambia and Tanzania. Furthermore, bilateral talks between both leaders focused on areas of mutual interest. Moreover, they discussed certain important matters of enhancing trade, investment, and infrastructure development.

The operationalization of Chinese-built Tanzania-Zambia Railways TAZARA and Tanzania-Zambia Mafuta TAZAMA Pipelines Limited was also the area of focus in the meeting. Furthermore, the presidents discussed the Tunduma- Nakonde one-stop border post. Both Presidents also presided over the signing of the Memoranda of understanding (MOU) in the areas of defense and tourism.

In addition, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Zambia Stanley Kakubo has expressed that this visit is highly significant.

“Tanzania is a strategic partner for the country in terms of transportation in the Southern Region and for freight and passengers through the Eastern African seaport of Dar-es-Salaam”.

This visit will strengthen ties between both sister countries. The increased collaboration through trade and investment and joint ventures will provide opportunities for ensuring improved integral economic transformation. Like others, President Hichilema has undertaken a trip to Tanzania that will have great reimbursements for both countries.

Zambia-Tanzania Relations

Zambia and Tanzania are one of the oldest allies in the African region. Both countries have a solid trade relationship, which has proven beneficial for both parties economically.

Moreover, both countries have a vision of strategic partnership right from the start. In 2019, the trade value of both countries was estimated to be $265 billion.

Lastly, for a better future, both countries are looking for win-win cooperation as well as to make a fresh and bigger contribution to world peace and development.
