Kingston, 6 September 2022 (TDI): The Prime Minister (PM) of Jamaica, Andrew Holness met the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdullah Shahid. He greeted the President of the UN General Assembly and welcomed the delegation with him.

The Jamaican Prime Minister, Holness added that the conversation was a meaningful one. He said that climate change, financing of the debt, youth development and issues, and education-related aspects were discussed during his meeting with the UNGA President.

Discussion on Climate Change’s Threat

The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Holness mentioned the threats of climate change to the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He raised the attention of the President of UNGA, that Jamaica, which also comes under SIDS faces the existential threats of Climate Change.

He also hoped that the issue of threats to the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) from climate change will be raised in the General Assembly session 2022.

Prime Minister Holness also assured the cooperation of the Jamaican state with the United Nations for sustainable prosperity.

Further, the President of the UN General Assembly, Shahid, also met the Jamaican Foreign Minister, Kamina J. Smith. The meeting with Foreign Minister Smith happened at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Appreciation by UNGA President

The President of the UN General Assembly, Abdullah Shahid appreciated the Jamaican government and the officials of the UN Women for their efforts in the country. He also encouraged the resilient position of the people in Jamaica.

President Shahid also added that the people and government in this country are working on their way to meet the aspirations of growth.

He also congratulated the Prime Minister, Holness for making Jamaica a country with achievements.

Nevertheless, the President of the UN General Assembly also congratulated the Prime Minister for their independence and the 60th anniversary of getting the UN’s membership.
