French President Macron on Call with President Putin
Earlier French President said that the call with the Russian President was frank, direct, and rapid. He said that the call was made on Zelenskiy’s behalf and asked President Putin to halt the war. Putin has repeatedly refused to engage with Zelenskiy directly.
President Macron said that the call didn’t bring any result.
He added: “It is my responsibility to take such initiatives when they are requested by Ukraine … and then — even as we condemn and sanction and continue to decide to act — to leave this path open so that, whenever the conditions could be met, we can obtain a cessation of hostilities.”
The Kremlin said that Putin had given an “exhaustive” explanation to Macron of the reasons for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Macron undertook active diplomacy in recent weeks to try to avert a Russian invasion of Ukraine, including holding talks with Putin in the Kremlin.
