Bucharest, 30 July 2022 (TDI): The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu paid an official visit to Romania at the invitation of Romanian President, Klaus Werner Iohannis.

The two sides discussed many topics including energy security, the war in Ukraine, and Moldova’s path to European Union. The President of Moldova expressed hope to deepen the relations between the two countries.

The President of Romania congratulated Moldova’s President for obtaining EU candidate status. He called it a ‘historic success’  for the Republic of Moldova.

Meanwhile, the two leaders also discussed the security development in Europe, Romania’s support in lifting the economy of Moldova in addition to energy security. They also discussed the effects of the Ukraine war.

Meeting with Prime Minister 

After that, the President of Moldova also met with Nicolae Ionel Ciucă, Prime Minister of Romania.

Furthermore, the Romanian Prime Minister emphasized the importance of political stability. Especially in the context of overlapping crises felt by citizens of Romania, Moldova as well as populations of other states.

Joint Statement

After the meeting between the two Presidents, a joint press statement was issued in which the leaders of Moldova and Romania vowed to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

“We know that Chisinau’s road ahead, on the path to European integration, is not an easy one. Completing these stages will, however, lead to the consolidation of the rule of law and to a modern, prosperous society based on European democratic values,” Iohannis said.

The President of Moldova expressed her gratitude for the consistent support that Romania provided to Moldova.

“We had consistent, applied discussions, focusing on many topics of bilateral interest. And as it should be, taking into account the deep, lasting and sincere ties between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, we coordinate closely and together identify the best solutions and ways forward,” the Romanian president pointed out.

“The situation requires us to act with maximum urgency and look for alternative solutions to keep the stability of the country and smoothly make it through the winter,” she highlighted.

She also expressed the wish to buy gas from Romania on an urgent basis to fulfill the energy needs of Romania.

“Moldova needs energy security solutions now! We want to buy gas from Romania, and it’s important that this happens as soon as possible,” Sandu emphasized.
