The tradition between the two countries is that a newly elected French President first makes a foreign visit to Germany after the inauguration. Germany welcomed President Macron with military honors.
In addition to that, the planned closed-door bilateral talks and working dinner focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Prior to the talks, Scholz commended the friendship and unity between France and Germany at a press conference.
“We stand side by side with Ukraine as part of the European family,” said Scholz. In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Scholz called upon European countries to be united by working together.
More to this, he said that Ukraine will be supported to enhance its defense capabilities so as to avoid the spreading of war to other countries.
On the other hand, President Macron spoke about the significance of their Franco-German friendship as both countries continue to maintain their tradition.
Previously, Scholz also went to Paris as part of his first foreign visit after becoming the German Chancellor in 2021.
The French President further highlighted during the meeting that both countries will create a stronger Europe that is ready to face great challenges.
Furthermore, Macron said that they will strengthen their joint positions with regard to defense and foreign policy as well as continue to support Ukraine together with other European countries.
