PM Shehbaz, Yunus Discuss Ties

New York, (TDI): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting held on Wednesday, emphasized the strong fraternal ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh, rooted in shared faith, history, and culture.

During their discussions, Prime Minister Shehbaz underscored the importance of enhancing bilateral relations through parliamentary exchanges and people-to-people contacts, including interactions among sportspersons, academics, and artists.

He invited the Bangladeshi chief executive to visit Pakistan, highlighting the need for regional cooperation and dialogue.

Both leaders agreed on the necessity of close collaboration at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels to foster progress for their nations.

PM Shehbaz also attended a ceremony marking 50 years of Bangladesh’s UN membership at Yunus’s invitation, alongside key ministers from his delegation.

PM Meets UN Secretary-General

In a separate meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging him to facilitate the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir and ensure the right to self-determination for Kashmiris.

He expressed Pakistan’s concerns regarding India’s actions in the region and emphasized the need for a resolution to ensure lasting peace in South Asia.

Additionally, PM welcomed Guterres’s initiative to organize a “Summit of the Future” and called for the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions against Palestinians, advocating for a ceasefire and support for a viable Palestinian state.

The prime minister also addressed the issue of rising Islamophobia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025-26.

Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s active role in the UN and its contributions to global peace and security.
