PM Shehbaz Urges PCB Chief to Ensure Merit-based Selection

Lahore, 5 August 2024 (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday advised Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi to ensure merit-based selections in the cricket board as well as the national team.

He made these remarks while speaking at the Gaddafi Stadium upgradation ceremony in Lahore.

The demolishing work at the Gaddafi Stadium was completed in June. As part of the upgradation work, which is part of PCB’s plan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, the main building will be moved closer to the box. The front of the building will have hospitality boxes and the back will house PCB offices.

Speaking at the occasion, the prime minister also asked Naqvi to improve domestic cricket in the country and urged him not to bow down to any political pressure while making any decisions.

“Even if the prime minister recommends someone against merit, you should politely decline it,” he said, adding that only meritocracy could bring back Pakistan’s lost glory in the world of cricket.

The premier further said that cricket stadiums needed to be revamped on modern lines. He praised Naqvi for taking up this uphill task.
