Islamabad, 21 August 2024 (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will address the 79th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 26, the provisional list of speakers issued by the United Nations revealed on Tuesday.
The high-level general debate of the 193-member assembly will be held from September 24 to 30 in New York
This will be PM Shehbaz’s second appearance at the UNGA. He previously represented Pakistan at the 2022 General Assembly session.
The UN has received confirmation of participation from 130 world leaders, Monica Graley, the spokesperson for the UNGA said in a press release.
“These leaders will share their views on international peace and security issues,” she said.
It should be noted that this is a provisional list, which will continue to be updated in the weeks leading up to the session concerning changes in attendance, schedules, and speaking slots of leaders, ministers and ambassadors.
The Assembly’s annual session will actually begin on Sept 10 where matters concerning heightening tensions in the world with several active conflicts, including in Palestine, Ukraine and the Sudan will come into discussion.

The high-level session, however, will begin on Sept 24 with Brazil, the traditional starter, commencing the debate. This will be followed by the US President Joe Biden’s final address of his presidency.
Before the session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report on the Work of the Organization covering the events in the previous year.
Guterres is also convening the ambitious Summit of the Future at UN Headquarters during the high-level week. The summit is scheduled for September 22-23.
Other key meetings scheduled are:
- Wednesday, Sept 25: High-level plenary meeting on threats y sea level rise
- Thursday: Sept 26: High-level meeting to commemorate International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
- Thursday: Sept 26: High-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance.
