United Nations, New York, 15 July 2021 (TDI): A permanent representative of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations (Enrique A. Manalo) and Undersecretary of the DFA’s Migrant Workers Affairs Office (Sarah Lou Y. Arriola) had shared each of its progress, learnings, and discussed the next steps in implementing the Compact along with Portugal, UN ESCAP, and UN Network on Migration at the sidelines of the UN High-Level Political Forum held 08 July 2021.
At the discussion, they focused on regional reviews and national experiences that highlight its achievements and promising practices in the GCM.
Acknowledged by various stakeholders and sectors, it indicated that migrants need protection and other measures for inclusion during the COVID-19 crisis.
As the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges, it emphasized that the GCM, as their blueprint, was useful that facilitated the repatriation of over a million migrant Filipino. For instance, it facilitated the repatriation of a total of 327,511 overseas Filipinos.
Linking to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the GCM implementation examined its impact on the COVID-19 pandemic.
