Pretoria, 4 November 2022 (TDI): Ethiopia and Tigray signed a peace agreement to end the long-standing crises happening in the northern part of the country.
The agreement was a sign of lasting peace through a permanent cessation of hostilities between the government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Remarks of other countries on this development
The peace agreement between the government of the people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front could not be successful without the involvement of the International community coming into play.
The Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has been a leading member of this agreement. He has been able to bring the two parties together for the success of this agreement.
The Africa Union (AU) has also played a greater part. The Africa Union is an organization formed by independent African countries which seek to promote unity in Africa.
Senator Jim Risch, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member in his remark wrote ” The war in Northern Ethiopia has gone on for two years with great suffering, little peace, and nearly no accountability.
I hope today’s cessation of hostilities agreement will end the fighting and start a path toward peace and accountability”.
Also, a press release from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed their happiness and applauded both parties for this great move.
They continued to entreat the two parties, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front to live in peace and unity.
Ethiopia and Tigray war
The war between Ethiopia and the Tigray Rebels has been going on for the past two years. The war has been fought mostly in the northern part of Ethiopia.
It has claimed more than 600 lives in the past years. Humanitarian workers, pressmen, women, and both civilian and military personnel have lost their lives in the cause of this war. This peace agreement will help to bring calm to that part of the country.
