Islamabad, 1 July 2022 (TDI): The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Shareef, conveyed his heartfelt congratulation to the President of China, President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, and the Chinese people on the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China.

Further, the Prime Minister added that Hong Kong exemplifies the successful application of “one nation, two systems.”

Hong Kong administration is working in a way that offers it a high degree of autonomy and guarantees freedom of expression and assembly, as well as other rights, under “one nation, two systems.”

Hong Kong is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the city’s return to China.

History of Hong Kong

After a century and a half of British colonial rule, Hong Kong was restored to China at midnight on July 1, 1997.

The purpose of the handover was to establish a “one country, two systems” arrangement between China and Hong Kong, with Hong Kong being a special administrative territory.

The United Kingdom and China signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration detailing their strategy for Hong Kong in 1984.

Moreover, this declaration said that Hong Kong will become a part of China on July 1, 1997. The city’s “existing social and economic structures” and “lifestyle” would stay unchanged for the next 50 years.

In this “one nation, two systems” model, Hong Kong would continue to operate as a capitalist economy, with inhabitants having rights to free speech, the press, assembly, and religious belief, among other things, at least until 2047.

President Xi Jinping on the 25 Anniversary of Hong Kong

President Xi Jinping commended Hong Kong citizens and extended his best wishes on the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland.

In addition to this, he stated that “His heart and the heart of the central government are always with their Hong Kong compatriots.”

He emphasized that as long as “one country, two systems” is preserved unwaveringly, Hong Kong would undoubtedly have an even better future and make new, larger contributions to China’s great rejuvenation.
