Berlin, 2 June 2023 (TDI): The newly appointed Sri Lankan Ambassador, Varuni Muthukumarana, called on the Pakistani Ambassador, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, today. Matters related to further enhancing cordial bilateral relations were candidly discussed between the two envoys.

There has been a long history of cordial bilateral ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. On numerous regional and international platforms, both nations have constantly backed one another in an effort to improve their relations.

Improving bilateral relations requires strengthening economic relationships. There may be potential for expanded commerce and investment between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

In order to encourage business partnerships, joint ventures, and trade delegations, both nations can identify industries that are of interest to each other, such as those in agriculture, textiles, IT services, tourism, and the pharmaceutical industry. Furthering economic cooperation is possible by looking into the potential of a free trade agreement (FTA) or preferential trade agreement (PTA).

Pakistan can further provide development assistance and support for infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka. This could involve sharing best practices in energy, transportation, and urban development, as well as giving technical expertise and financial assistance.

Defense and security are also a domain of common interest for both states that can be strengthened with cooperation for regional stability. Military-to-military contacts, cooperative training programmes, and intelligence sharing can all be improved between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Cooperation in counter-terrorism operations, maritime security, and defense industry collaboration can all help to strengthen bilateral ties in this area.

People-to-people relationships can be increased through education and cultural exchanges, which can lead to greater mutual understanding and camaraderie.

Encouragement of student exchanges, scholarships, and academic cooperation can aid in information sharing and the formation of long-lasting bonds. Cultural festivals, exhibitions, and art exchanges can also serve to develop cultural understanding and appreciation.

Sports activities, friendly matches, and competitions between Pakistani and Sri Lankan teams can develop a favorable climate and tighter ties.

Collaboration in healthcare and disaster management can serve as a foundation for mutual support and cooperation. Sharing experience, training programmes, and resources in healthcare, medical research, and disaster preparedness can help both countries.

By focusing on these areas, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will strengthen their bilateral ties, increase mutual cooperation, and lay the groundwork for long-term friendship and collaboration.
